A home for the database

Sixteen gigabytes of memory and three hundred gigabytes of data storage, so a working SQL Server database stays in cache and out of trouble.

Databases want memory

A SQL Server database is quick when its working set fits in memory and slow when it does not. Pro's sixteen gigabytes and eight virtual cores are specified for that: a large or heavily queried database, kept in cache, with the application beside it or on a second server over a private network.

What you get

  • SQL Server Express pre-installed, or a full edition installed under your own license.
  • Three hundred gigabytes of data storage on a drive separate from the system.
  • Full isolation on Dell Hyper-V hosts: nobody else's workload competes for your memory.
  • Remote Desktop and full administrator access for SQL Server Management Studio, backups and jobs.
  • A dedicated IP, an unmetered 100 Mbps connection, and a virtual private cloud when the database should not face the internet at all.

Pro is the plan for this

A small business database on SQL Server Express is happy on Standard. Pro is for the database that is the point of the server: large, busy, or licensed beyond Express. Beyond Pro, a dedicated database server gives it the hardware to itself.

The plan for this: Pro

16 GB of memory, 8 virtual cores, 80 GB system drive and 300 GB data drive, for $61.99 a month, on a Dell Hyper-V host with full isolation. The other three plans are the same server with more or less memory and processing power.

Common questions

Is SQL Server Express enough?

For many small-business databases, yes. Microsoft caps its database size and memory use; when a database outgrows those limits, install a licensed edition on the same server.

Can I bring my own SQL Server license?

Yes. Install any edition you hold a license for; you are the administrator.

Can the database be kept off the internet?

Yes. On a virtual private cloud the database server talks to the application server over a private address and does not answer on its public IP at all.

Who does the backups?

The platform is backed up routinely; database-level backups, jobs and restores are yours to schedule from SQL Server Management Studio, and support helps set them up.
