Several heavy programs at once
The real cause of a slow day is rarely one application. It is four, and none of them willing to share.
Where the time actually goes
Ask what is open at four o'clock on a busy afternoon and the answer is a list: the accounting package, a large spreadsheet, the industry application, a browser with twenty tabs, a video call, and Outlook underneath all of it. Each is fine on its own. Together they exhaust the memory of an ordinary machine, and from that point everything waits on everything else.
Standard has fourteen gigabytes of memory and twelve virtual cores, which is enough for that list to stay open without anyone closing something to make room.
The signs you are here
- You close programs to make another one behave.
- Switching between windows has a pause in it.
- The machine is fine first thing and slow by mid-afternoon.
- A restart is the fix, and it is needed more than once a week.
Standard or Advanced
Standard covers a heavy office day. Advanced is for the case where the list includes development tools, a database engine or datasets that do not fit in memory - work that is heavy by nature rather than heavy by accumulation. If you are between the two, take Standard; moving up later is straightforward.
The plan for this: Standard
14 GB of memory, 12 virtual cores, 80 GB system drive and 50 GB data drive, for $30.95 a month, on a server-class host that keeps the desktop quick from any device. The other three packages are the same desktop with more or less memory and processing power.
Common questions
How do I know whether I need Standard rather than Basic?
The usual signal is waiting. If a program regularly pauses while it thinks, if a spreadsheet takes noticeable time to recalculate, or if you close things to make room, Standard is the plan that removes the wait.
Will it handle a video call alongside everything else?
Yes. Teams and Zoom run on the desktop with the rest of the work, and the standard Remote Desktop client redirects your microphone and camera into the session.
Can I try Standard and drop to Basic if it is more than I need?
Yes. Change plan whenever you like; the desktop keeps its files, programs and settings and gets the smaller allocation.
