Line-of-business applications
ERP front ends, practice management, dispatch and inventory software - the packages an industry runs on that were never light.
The software nobody chose for its speed
Every industry has one: the practice-management system, the dispatch board, the inventory package, the ERP client that was specified a decade ago and has been growing ever since. They were chosen because they do the job, not because they are quick, and they were written for a machine with plenty of memory and nothing else competing for it.
Standard is that machine. Fourteen gigabytes of memory and twelve virtual cores give the heavy application room to work while the mailbox, the browser and the spreadsheet stay open around it.
Why these applications suit a cloud desktop
- They usually need administrator rights to install and update, which every plan includes.
- They often expect a fixed Windows environment, which a persistent desktop provides.
- Staff reach the same installed, configured application from any location without a VPN.
- Vendor support sees an ordinary Windows 11 machine, because that is what it is.
Checking the fit
Most vendors publish minimum and recommended specifications. If the recommended figure is eight gigabytes or less, Basic will run it; if it is more, or if the application is one of several heavy things open at once, Standard is the right package. If you are unsure, tell us the software and we will say which.
The plan for this: Standard
14 GB of memory, 12 virtual cores, 80 GB system drive and 50 GB data drive, for $30.95 a month, on a server-class host that keeps the desktop quick from any device. The other three packages are the same desktop with more or less memory and processing power.
Common questions
Can our vendor install and support the software on the desktop?
Yes. Give the vendor a login and they see a standard Windows 11 machine with administrator rights - the same thing they support everywhere else.
Does the application need to see a server on our network?
If the application talks to a server in your office, that connection needs setting up. Talk to us before you sign up and we will tell you what is involved.
What if the vendor recommends more than 14 GB?
Advanced has twenty gigabytes of memory and sixteen virtual cores. Beyond that, a VPS or a dedicated server is usually the better shape, and the comparison page walks through it.
