One Windows program on a Mac
The cheapest way to keep a single Windows-only application reachable without buying a second computer or fighting with a compatibility layer.
The familiar situation
Everything you do runs happily on the Mac, except one thing: the accounting package, the industry tool, the client's required software, the old but essential utility. It only exists for Windows. The options have been a second computer, a virtual machine on the Mac that eats its memory, or a compatibility layer that works until it does not.
A Light desktop is the fourth option. It is a real Windows 11 machine with administrator rights, so the program installs the way it was designed to, and it opens in a browser tab beside the rest of your Mac work.
Why a real Windows machine matters
- The program is running on Windows, not on a translation of it, so updates and support work as the vendor expects.
- Administrator rights are included, so anything the installer needs - a driver, a service, a registry change - it can have.
- Licenses that check the machine they run on see one consistent Windows machine.
- The Mac keeps all of its own memory and storage.
Sizing for one program
Three gigabytes of memory and four virtual cores are enough for a single ordinary program. If that one program is a large accounting file or a heavy line-of-business package, Basic or Standard is the right package, and the plan pages describe where each stops.
The plan for this: Light
3 GB of memory, 4 virtual cores, 80 GB system drive and 10 GB data drive, for $11.95 a month, on a server-class host that keeps the desktop quick from any device. The other three packages are the same desktop with more or less memory and processing power.
Common questions
Will my program install on it?
If it installs on a Windows 11 PC, it installs on the desktop. You have administrator rights, so nothing needs unlocking on our side.
Can I copy and paste between the Mac and the desktop?
Yes. Clipboard redirection works in both the browser and the Remote Desktop client, so text and files move between the two.
Is this the same as running Windows in a virtual machine on my Mac?
It does the same job without using the Mac's memory or storage, and without a Windows license to buy - the desktop ships with one pre-activated in the monthly price.
