Browser-and-email work

Most of the day in a browser and a mailbox, with documents opened as they arrive rather than built from scratch. Light is built for exactly that.

What this day looks like

A web application or two open in tabs, a mailbox that stays open all day, and the occasional attachment that needs reading, signing or a small edit. Nothing on the screen is heavy on its own; the point is that it is all in one place, reachable from any machine, and it stays where you left it.

Light gives that work a Windows 11 desktop of its own: three gigabytes of memory, four virtual cores, and full administrator rights. Sign in from the office, from home or from a tablet and the same tabs and the same inbox are waiting.

Why not just use the device in front of you

  • The device in front of you changes. The desktop does not, so the work does not have to move between machines.
  • Some web applications and mail setups only behave properly in Windows, and the machine in front of you may be a Mac, a Chromebook or an iPad.
  • Company data stays on the desktop rather than on whichever laptop happened to be nearby.
  • A browser is all the local machine has to run, so an old or cheap one is fine.

Where Light stops

Light is not a workstation and does not pretend to be one. If a spreadsheet is open all day alongside three other programs, or the browser habitually has twenty tabs, start on Basic. Moving up later is straightforward and you pay the difference from that point.

The plan for this: Light

3 GB of memory, 4 virtual cores, 80 GB system drive and 10 GB data drive, for $11.95 a month, on a server-class host that keeps the desktop quick from any device. The other three packages are the same desktop with more or less memory and processing power.

Common questions

Is 3 GB of memory enough for browsing and email?

For a browser with a handful of tabs and a mail client, yes. Where it becomes tight is a browser with many tabs open all day, or a spreadsheet open alongside everything else - that is the point to choose Basic.

Does Light run Microsoft Office?

Yes. Word, Excel and Outlook run on Light for ordinary use. If you keep several large workbooks open at once, Basic is the sensible starting point.

What do I need on my own machine?

A browser. The desktop opens through a link on Windows, a Mac, Linux, a Chromebook, an iPad or an Android tablet. A standard Remote Desktop client works too.
