Everything open at once

Where the answer to what are you running is a list rather than a name, and closing things to make room has stopped being acceptable.

The list

Two browsers with separate profiles. A development environment. A database tool. Three spreadsheets, one of them large. The design tool. Teams. The line-of-business application. A terminal. Whatever is playing in the background. None of it is going to be closed, and on an ordinary machine that decision has already been made for you by the memory running out.

Advanced is the largest desktop on the price list: twenty gigabytes of memory, sixteen virtual cores, and a hundred-gigabyte data drive. The reason to choose it is rarely one program. It is the combination.

What the extra capacity buys

  • Switching between windows without the pause.
  • A machine that is as fast at five as it was at nine.
  • Room for the next program without a decision about which one to close.
  • Administrator rights over all of it, so the setup is yours and stays yours.

Past the top of the range

If Advanced is still not enough, the work has usually stopped being desktop-shaped. Hosting a service for other people to reach is a VPS; a workload too large to share hardware is a dedicated server. The comparison page walks through when each is the better product.

The plan for this: Advanced

20 GB of memory, 16 virtual cores, 80 GB system drive and 100 GB data drive, for $49.95 a month, on a server-class host that keeps the desktop quick from any device. The other three packages are the same desktop with more or less memory and processing power.

Common questions

Is Advanced overkill for an office day?

For an ordinary office day, yes - Basic or Standard is the right package and costs less. Advanced is for the day that has development tools, data work or a genuinely long list of heavy programs in it.

Can I go down to Standard later if I do not need it?

Yes. Change plan whenever you like; the desktop keeps its files, programs and settings and gets the smaller allocation.

Is Advanced the same as a VPS?

No. Advanced is a desktop you sit in front of, with a full Windows desktop environment. A VPS is a server you administer, sized and licensed for running services rather than for a person working at it.
